Air Force Brig. Gen. Wayne R. Monteith has been awarded this year’s Solomon Portrait of Excellence by the Brevard County Tourist Development Council. The award, which has been presented annually since 1994, recognizes outstanding community leadership that positively impacts the tourism industry and economy of the Space Coast.
Monteith, commander of the 45th Space Wing and director of the Eastern Range at Patrick Air Force Base here on the Space Coast, was honored during this year’s Hospitality & Tourism Awards presentation ceremony at the annual Space Coast Office of Tourism Luncheon May 15 at the Radisson in Cape Canaveral.
Monteith was cited for leading the more-than 13,000 military and Department of Defense civilian and contractor personnel who are responsible for the processing and launching of U.S. government and commercial satellites from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The mission of the 45th Space Wing is to assure access to space and to support global operations.
“General Monteith has been a tremendous partner to this region’s tourism industry,” said Eric Garvey, the executive director of Florida’s Space Coast Office of Tourism. “The strong communication and connections he has established with the local community have helped everyone – visitors, residents and businesses alike – better appreciate each and every rocket launch from the Space Coast.”
The Space Coast’s annual tourism luncheon is held in partnership with the U.S. travel community to celebrate the value travel holds for the economy, businesses and personal well-being. The event reflects on the success of the industry and serves as a way to say thanks to local hospitality professionals for working together to promote growth.
