Talk about a rocket-powered tourism boost. Our Space Coast has found itself in some impressive company after being named by CNN as one of the places to visit in 2019.
And we’re not just talking about one of the top spots to check out in Florida, or even in the entire United States. No, this time we’re on a fairly elite list, to put it mildly. The rundown of 19 places to visit that CNN Travel put together was drawn from a pool of tourism sites worldwide! Only four U.S. destinations made the final cut: the Space Coast, New York City, the Grand Canyon, and Hawaii Island (aka the Big Island).
International locales on the list include Christchurch, New Zealand; Ghana; Egypt; Jaffa, Israel; Lima, Peru; Kerala, India; Normandy, France; Fukuoka, Japan; St. Barts, French West Indies; and the Hebrides, Scotland.
One major reason we’re on the CNN roll call is the obvious one: the U.S. space program. With several activities planned this year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 mission to the moon, there will be heightened interest in coming to Brevard County to be part of the celebration, or just to see firsthand the many facets of Kennedy Space Center, the heart and soul of the country’s legendary space exploration efforts.
Along with jaw-dropping exhibits and astronaut simulations, CNN Travel also gave a thumbs-up to the Space Coast’s unsurpassed surfing action at “pristine” Sebastian Inlet State Park; the joys of kayaking along the Indian River Lagoon; and the zip-line fun and bird’s-eye view of Brevard Zoo’s denizens that you can enjoy at Treetop Trek in Melbourne.
